Rico Rodriguez, who played trombone with a long list of artists but most famously with The Specials, died on Friday at the age of 80.

The Specials said on Twitter “Our dear friend Rico passed away today. We offer our deepest condolences to his family. His legacy will go on forever and a day. RIP dear Rico”

Rodriguez was born in Havana, Cuba but soon moved to Jamaica with his family. He was taught trombone by a schoolmate and, as a young adult, started working with rasta drummer Count Ossie, recording more than a hundred sides with various Jamaican artists. Rico moved to England in 1961 where started playing in reggae bands and was used on hundreds more recordings. In 1976, he signed with Island for the album Man From Wareika.

In 1979, Rodriguez became a part-time member of the British ska band The Specials for their debut album which was produced by Elvis Costello. Elvis wrote yesterday on Twitter “My condolences to his family and my friends in The Specials at the loss of the great Rico. What a moment it was to hear him play on “Rudy””.

Rudy, A Message to You opened that album and became one of the band’s classics.

Rodriguez became an official member of the band for their second album, More Specials (1980) and stayed with the group until 1984, working with other artists such as Ian Dury and Mikey Dread.

Starting in 1996, Rodriguez became a member of Jool’s Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra where he stayed until 2012. He also played with his own band at various festivals.

Rico received an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for his service to music in 2007. In 2012, he received the Silver Musgrave Medal by the Institute of Jamaica for his contribution to Jamaican music.

Jools Holland Pays Tribute To Rico Rodriguez

Rico Rodriguez, who died on Friday at the age of 80, may be best known for his time with The Specials, but he spent much longer with Jools Holland’s Rhythm and Blues Orchestra which he was with from 1986 to 2012.

Holland has paid tribute to Rodriguez on his official webpage:

September 4th: A tribute to Rico Rodriguez who died today

I first met and worked with Rico Rodriguez in the early 1980s; I was introduced to him by Kirsty McColl. I immediately became a fan. From the 1990s until only quite recently he was a regular member and one of the stars of my orchestra, until his health made it impossible for him to continue playing. He was an originator and a unique person in 20th Century music.

He bridged the gap between early Jamaican music and modern British ska pop music. As a man he was my friend and a great friend. I toured the world with him and spent as much time enjoying his company as his music. He had a great knowledge on many subjects from the Old Testament to horseracing; his personality and sound were as one and both adorable.

I know I speak for my whole band when I say I will miss him both as a friend and as a fellow musician. – Jools Holland

R.I.P John Bradbury of The Specials 1953-2015

$

The Specials drummer John Bradbury has died at the age of 62.

Bradbury joined The Special AKA following the split of the original Specials in 1981 with three members becoming Fun Boy Three. John (JB) was the band’s drummer for the hit ‘Nelson Mandela’.

As a songwriter John wrote ‘The Selecter’, the double A side of ‘Gangsters’ for The Specials.

Bradbury was also the drummer for the reunited Specials in 2009 after getting together for an appearance on ‘Later…With Jools Holland’. That lead to a full-blown reunion and a tour of Australia and Japan.

The latter day Specials recorded the live album ‘More … Or Less … The Specials Live’ from their European tour of 2011.

The Specials announced the death of John Bradbury in a tweet:

Statement from The Specials

It is with deepest regret that we have to announce the very sad news that our much loved husband and father John “Brad” Bradbury passed away on Monday the 28th of December. Brad’s drumming was the powerhouse behind The Specials and it was seen as a key part to the Two Tone sound.

He was much respected in the world of drumming and his style of reggae and ska was seen as genuinely ground breaking when The Specials first hit the charts in 1979. He was an integral part of The Specials reforming in 2008 and toured with them extensively up to the present day.

His contribution to the world of music can not be understated and he will much missed by family, friends and fans alike. It is the families sincerest wish that they are allowed the time to remember him privately.
